About Dr. Emily Cook

I have experienced the power of therapy to transform how people think, feel, and behave. And there have been times in my life when I reached out for help, too. I was struggling with my relationship, and I wanted a new perspective on how I kept finding myself repeating old patterns from my past. I emerged from therapy with a renewed sense of my strengths, with insights into how I think and feel, and with new skills to communicate my needs to others.

I know what it’s like to feel lost and vulnerable and to need help finding the map to your life. I know what it’s like to feel as though you’re in the bottom of a hole and don’t know how to get out. I know what it’s like to feel as though you’re banging your head against the wall of your partner’s stubbornness, insensitivity, or distance. I know what it’s like to struggle as a new mom.

But you don’t have to be alone in your pain. You are worthy of a life full of joy. You are capable of healthy, mutually-satisfying relationships. I can help.

My expertise is working with couples and adult individuals who want to make meaningful changes in their lives and relationships. My style is warm, proactive, and understanding. Clients who seek talk therapy from me benefit from my gentle humor, sensitive suggestions, unique insights, and careful listening. I will help you feel empowered to use what you learn in our sessions to do, think, and feel differently. I will help you make sense of your experiences, better understand who you are, and figure out how to change the patterns that keep you feeling stuck. I’m always reading new books about therapy and relationships and I weave these ideas into our work so that it’s infused with fresh insight and proven strategies.

I serve as President of the Middle Atlantic Division of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and I am a member of the National Military Family Association. I trained with the Center for Deployment Psychology in couple and family therapy techniques for issues related to military service. I am a member of the Bethesda, MD Lady Docs, a local group of physicians and doctors committed to wellness and healthy relationships. I also provide clinical supervision to marriage and family therapists as an AAMFT / Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists Approved Supervisor. I have been providing individual therapy, couples therapy, and family therapy since 2008 and have worked in private practice in Bethesda since 2010.

I’m a woman who tries her best every day to listen to the voice of her heart, to teach two small humans how to make good choices, and to love a husband who is so totally worthy of love. I have been married since 2009 and have two boys, a toddler and a new baby. We love our two rescue dogs, enjoy visiting local breweries, and wish we could travel more. A few of my favorite things include dinner parties, impressionist art, peonies, scuba diving, stained glass, and twinkle lights.
